Synopsis[]

Caught in the act in an attempt to rob a bank, Alexandre Toledo, a troubled young middle-class man, kills the bank employee who surprises him and soon after tries to escape. However, his brother Raul and his brother-in-law Téo hand him over to the police. His sister is Diná, a beautiful, charming and jealous woman married to Téo, who is much younger than her, with whom she has a five-year-old daughter. Diná is the one who does everything to defend Alexandre. She tries to hire the renowned lawyer Otávio Jordão to defend Alexandre, but Otávio promptly refuses the proposal, since the victim was his good friend. Therefore, Alexandre is arrested and sentenced to eighteen years in prison. In prison he ends up committing suicide by overdosing on medicines, but not before swearing vengeance on the ones responsible for his conviction, namely: his brother, brother-in-law, and lawyer.

With Alexandre's suicide, the doctor and family friend Dr. Alberto Rezende, adept at spiritism, starts trying to help his mother, Maroca, and everyone in the family. Alberto is in love with Diná, but then turns his attention to Estela, Diná's sister. Estela lives with her teenage rebel daughter Bia, who she has taken care of alone since she was left by her husband Ismael. However, after years of absence, Ismael reappears and starts to negatively influence his daughter against her mother.

There is also the pension of Dona Cininha, where Tibério lives, a kind civil servant who is Estela's friend and who believes he has an imaginary friend; Adonay, a mysterious man nicknamed "Masked Man", who hides his horribly deformed face; and the gambling addict Agenor, Lisa's father.

Dr. Otávio, with whom Diná begins to live a relationship of love and hate, blaming him for everything bad that happened to her brother, is a widower and father of two children: the young Otávio Júnior (Tato) and Eduardo (Dudu). However, Alexandre, in the suicide valley, a place of pain and suffering for those who kill themselves, starts to torment everyone's lives, fulfilling what he promised before he died, such as leaving Tato drugged and alcoholic, encouraging him without for him to know, for him to go to brothels and nightclubs, in addition to hitting women and his own brother. He causes all this to hurt Otávio.

He also ends up ruining Raul and Andreza's marriage by negatively influencing his brother's mother-in-law Guiomar, formerly a sweet woman who becomes a viper because of Alexandre. He also makes Téo become very violent towards Dina.

Diná and Otávio end up falling in love, as well as Téo and Lisa, Alexandre's ex-girlfriend. The only people who are aware of Alexandre's malevolent influence on the living are Dr. Alberto and Téo's mother Josefa, both adepts of spiritism, who try to do something through mediumistic sessions.
